A common problem for guys is finding color combinations. It's tough to know what looks right and even more difficult to move away from the few combinations that you know work.
In an effort to help out with that problem, I've brought out the color wheel. Now, I don't have this thing memorized, and I know it's a bit strange, but I know how to make it useful.
Most days I wear khaki chinos. They obviously fall in the yellow to yellow-orange range. That means that I should avoid a yellow or orange tie or shirt. A safer color is one either opposite or about 1/3 of the way around the wheel away - blues reds and greens.
Use this approach when trying to match or coordinate ties, shirts, jackets, pants, socks and cufflinks. You can stick with one or two colors, or try for more (I max out at 3).
So, to successfully use the color wheel, try to pick colors equi-distant from each other and you won't have to worry about matching colors again. Blue socks and a green tie (or the reverse) will work with your khaki pants and a white shirt.
